5 held after Leitrim burglary

Gardaí have arrested five men as part of the nationwide anti-burglary operation, Operation Fiacla, following an investigation into two burglaries in Drumshanbo.

Shortly after 9.30pm yesterday, March 27 Gardaí from National Support Services, patrolling at part of Operation Fiacla, became aware of two burglaries which had occurred in Drumshanbo. A navy coloured VW Golf had been observed in the vicinity of the burglaries.

Following these reports the Garda vehicles took up positions on the N4 close to Longford and monitored all the eastbound traffic.

Eastern Region RSU units were also monitoring the M4 motorway and at approximately 11.20pm they observed a navy coloured VW Golf travelling eastbound between Mullingar and Enfield. The suspect vehicle was eventually stopped on the M4 at Johnstown.

During a search of the car Gardaí discovered cash as well as other items. The five males in the vehicle – three in their teens, one in his 20s and one 30 year old male – were arrested at the scene and taken to Carrick-on-Shannon, Ballymote and Sligo Garda Stations where they are currently being detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.
