Abbey closure causes local concern

The closure of Boyle Abbey for the winter period last Wednesday has caused concern in the town.

Boyle Abbey is one of the town’s premier tourist attractions and it officially closed to the public during the week until March 2017.

Visitors to the Abbey, of which there are still many, are no longer able to access the heritage site which has caused concern among the business community of the town.

In addition, the by weekly visit by the CIE Tour from nearby Kilronan Castle to the Abbey has also ceased with the bus now bringing the passengers to Sligo Abbey which remains open until the 12th October.

While it is understood the tour will still visit Boyle for lunch, they will not stop off at the Abbey as has been the case all summer.

One concerned local told Boyletoday.com: ” Closing the Abbey so early in the year is a disgrace. Why can it not be kept open longer and at weekend? In addition, it seems crazy that Boyle Abbey and King House are not sold as a joint package”.

The OPW could not be contacted for comment.
