Alarming increase in burglaries locally

Recently released figures from the Central Statistics Office show a 9.09% increase in break-ins for the Boyle area.

The figures relate to the period January to December 2015.

Close to Boyle, Frenchpark recorded a 25% increase in burglaries in that period, Elphin had an 80% increase while Keadue came in with a 50% increase.

Also in the Roscommon/Longford Division, Roosky showed a 220% increase, Tulsk a 100% increase and Strokestown had a 75% increase in burglaries.

In Castlerea, the Garda District Headquarters, there was a drop of 37.04%

The figures come at a time when there is much disquiet locally at reduced opening hours at Boyle Garda Station which covers many of the areas detailed above.

The changes in Boyle came into effect in April 2015 raising fears that a reduction in hours would result in a rise in crime in the area covered by Boyle Gardai.

The public have also voiced concern at the use of members and resources of An Garda Siochana from Boyle to cover the Castlerea area which is now the District HQ.

The national figure for burglaries showed a decrease on the 2014 figure.
