Boyle Arts Festival

With the long summer evenings now upon us, it can only mean one thing…. Boyle Arts Festival 2014 is now only weeks away! And this is going to be one Festival to remember, as it marks our 25th anniversary. The Festival will open this year on July 24th and run until August 2nd. A very exciting, eclectic programme of events has almost been finalised and details will soon be announced, ahead of the official launch. Meanwhile our website, www.boylearts.com is being updated daily, with confirmed artists and events.

 Boyle Arts Festival – Poetry Competition 2014.

Following on from last year’s highly successful Poetry competition, we are delighted to announce that we are running it again this year.

There is a prize of €500 for the winner and four €50 prizes for highly commended poems.

The closing date is Friday June 20th and shortlisted poems will be notified ahead of the awards, which will be held on Sunday 27th July 2014 in King House, Boyle at 7:30pm.

 We are delighted to announce that the poems will be judged this year, by Michael O’Dea

 Michael, a native of Roscommon town, has published two poetry collections in Ireland, Sunfire (Dedalus Press, 1998) and Turn Your Head (Dedalus Press, 2003). In 2005 a chapbook, Felos AindaSerra, was published by Amastra-N-Galar in Galicia, Spain. Along with John O’Dea, he co-edited The Roscommon Anthology (Roscommon Literary Heritage Group)in 2013. Promoting poetry among young people, he published Slants, volumes of students’ poetry in the early nineties.

Over the years he has taught creative reading, given poetry workshops to students, writing groups, and in the prisons; and he has been judge and organiser of a number of poetry competitions.

RULES FOR POETRY COMPETITION

Entry: €5 per poem

An Entry form must accompany the poems and this can acquired by going to www.boylearts.com clicking on the ‘Festival’ tab and selecting ‘Poetry Competition’ in the drop down menu. Alternatively you can email [email protected]

 

Entrants may submit as many poems as they wish,

The name of the entrant must not appear on the poem itself,

Poems, in English must be the unpublished, original work of the author,

Poems must be printed on one side of A4 paper maximum length 40 lines,

Judges decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into,

Poems will not be returned.

 

Boyle Arts Festival will open on July 24th and run until August 2nd 2014.
