Boyle native is a world champion

A Boyle native has recently been crowned a World Champion.

John McDermott, who now lives in Sligo and is originally from Abbeytown in Boyle, won gold in the 400m 75 age group World Master Athletic Championship in Torun, Poland recently.

The following day John participated in the Pentathlon and the 60m hurdles and won bronze in both events.

In the process John set 4 Irish records – 400m, pentathlon, 60m hurdles, 1000m.

In the 400m, John put in an impressive time of 1:07:28.

After his win, John’s daughter Aine said: “Congratulations to my Dad, John Mac Dermott, now a World gold medalist in 400 metres, Mens 75 year age group. He won (for Ireland 🇮🇪) today at the World Masters Athletics Championship in Toruń Poland. No such thing as ‘ageing out’ of anything! Well done Dad”!

John is a regular visitor to his native Abbeytown where his brother Liam and Liam’s wife Alice live in the family homeplace.
