Carrick Lidl store refused permission

An Bord Pleanala has refused permission to Lidl for a new store in Carrick on Shannon.

The company had planned to close it’s store in Cortober on the Roscommon side of the town and move to a new site on the N4 eastern side of town close to the Rosebank Shopping Centre.

Previously Leitrim Co Co granted permission for the new store but this was appealed to An Bord Pleanala who overturned the decision.

The company then lodged a new application.

This was subsequently rejected by the council and now by An Bord Pleanala.

Local businessman Gerry Murtagh said the  decision was “local democracy and people power winning out”. He said it was “a good day for Carrick” . Mr Murtagh also said “Lidl are welcome in the town, but not in that place”.

There has been no statement from Lidl at the time of writing.
