Douglas Hyde book launch tonight

The launch of anew book on the life of Ireland’s first president and Roscommon man Douglas Hyde will take place on Friday evening.

The book is titled ” Forgotten Patriot Douglas Hyde and the foundation of the Irish Presidency”

The event will take place at the President Douglas Hyde Interpretative Centre in Portahard, Frenchpark at 6pm with free entry.

Also on the evening there will be a free tasting of HYDE Irish Whiskey.

Douglas Hyde ( 17 January 1860 – 12 July 1949) who was also known as An Craoibhín Aoibhinn (“The Pleasant Little Branch”), was an Irish academic, linguist, and scholar of the Irish language who served as the first President of Ireland from 1938-45.

He was a leading figure in the Gaelic revival, and first president of the Gaelic League, one of the most influential cultural organisations in Ireland at the time.
