Drumboylan man drowns in Shannon

The man who drowned in the Shannon outside Leitrim village on Sunday afternoon has been named as Patrick Moffatt from Lurga, Drumboylan.

It is understood the Waterways Ireland employee drowned when examining Lock 16 on the Shannon Erne system.

Mr Moffit was in his early fifties and a married man.

The Health and Safety Authority are investigating what is being described as a tragic accident.

Shane Anderson, the Assistant Inspector of Navigation of Waterways Ireland issued a brief notice to mariners and skippers of boats on Monday morning advising of the closure of the waterway while investigations take place.

Patrick will repose at his residence from 2 o’clock on Wednesday until 5 o’clock on Thursday evening with removal to St.Patrick’s Church, Drumboylan, arriving at 7 o’clock. Mass of Christian Burial on Friday at 12 o’clock with funeral afterwards to Kilronan Cemetery.
