Gurteen woman dies after crash

The girl who died following a road traffic collision outside Claremorris on Thursday has been named as Karen Powell from Gurteen.

Karen was well known in the Boyle area having worked at the Visitor Center in Lough Key Forest and Activity Park.

She was a student of Social Studies at GMIT in Castlebar.

The collision between Karen’s car and a truck took place on the N17 around 12 noon on Thursday.

Karen was airlfted to University College Hospital Galway where she lost her fight for life on Friday.

Karen will repose at Perry’s Funeral Home Ballymote this Sunday from 3:30pm until 7pm. Removal on Monday to St. Patrick’s church Gurteen for Mass of the resurrection at 12 noon. Burial immediately afterwards in Gurteen cemetery. Family flowers only please. Donations in lieu, if desired, to Strangeboat Organ Donor Foundation C/O O’Dowd Funeral Directors, Gurteen.

Lough Key Visitors Centre will remain closed Sunday as a mark of respect for Karen. In a statement the management and staff have said  “All the staff and management at Lough Key are deeply sorry to hear about the death of our team member Karen Powell. As a mark of respect the Visitor Centre at Lough Key Forest and Activity Park will be closed tomorrow Sunday 22/11/2015. Our thoughts and prayers are with Karen’s family in this difficult time. RIP Karen.”
