Large gorse fire on Kilronan Mountain

Boyle Fire Service spent Friday fighting a large gorse fire on Kilronan mountain near Geevagh.

The fire was visible from the east of Boyle as our photograph shows.

Ocean FM reported on Friday night that fire crews from Leitrim, Sligo, Roscommon and Longford were fighting the extensive outbreak on the mountain.

According to the station “Heavy smoke is drifting down from the mountain over the R284 road through Geevagh, Ballyfarnon and onto Keadue.”

“Sligo Fire Service has had three appliances in attendance since 8 o’clock this morning.”

“There are also units from Carrick on Shannon and Ballinamore in County Leitrim, as well as the Boyle unit.”

The fire was subsequently contained before midnight on Friday.

There are also reports Friday night of another large fire north of Arigna.
