Lecture on county’s market towns

A meeting of the Co. Roscommon Historical and Archaeological Society will take place at 8p.m. on Tuesday 13th March in the Percy French Hotel, Strokestown.

Following the meeting at 8.30 p.m. (sharp), an illustrated lecture entitled ‘Morphology and Architecture of the Market Towns of County Roscommon’ will be given by Alan O’Connell.

The lecture will examine how the six market towns, comprising Ballaghaderreen, Boyle, Castlerea, Elphin, Roscommon and Strokestown evolved and how their development reflects the architectural movements in these islands.

Alan O’Connell is a graduate of the MA in Regional and Urban Planning from the School of Architecture and urban Planning, University College Dublin, specialising in Urban Design. During his Local Authority career he has overseen the delivery of various land use plans and design guidance documents for market towns within County Roscommon and elsewhere. He is currently head of the Town Centre Planning Unit in Roscommon County Council with oversight of Urban Design Framework Plans for the market towns of County Roscommon.
