O’Mahoney may move to Galway

Speculation continues that Ballaghaderreen based Mayo Fine Gael TD John O’Mahony may move to the Galway West constituency for the next general election, However Deputy O’Mahony has told Midwest News that no decision has yet been made.

Fine Gael currently holds four of the five Dail seats in Mayo.

However, the number of TDs in Mayo will drop from 5 to 4, following a recommendation from the constituency commission, while a large section of south Mayo will be moved into the Galway West constituency for the next election – over 7,000 potential voters from the south Mayo area will be voting in Galway West under the revised boundaries.

Deputy John O’Mahony is currently considering his options, and his role as All-Ireland winning football manager of Galway in 1998 and 2001 would be a help if he decides to contest the next election in Galway West.

This lunchtime, he told Midwest News that no decision has yet been made and it’s likely that it won’t be made until February when Fine Gael’s National Conference will be held in Castlebar.
