The Freedom of the County is to be conferred this evening on writer, artist and academic Brian O’Doherty.
Mr O’Doherty was born in Ballaghaderreen in 1928 and has lived in New York for over 50 years.
He studied medicine in UCD and spent a year working in a hospital in 1957 before devoting himself full-time to the visual arts.
In the 1960s, he was an art critic for the New York Times.
The decision to award him Freedom of Roscommon was made at a meeting of Roscommon Co Co in January in recognition of his many achievements.
The conferring ceremony will take place at the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Royal Hospital, Kilmainham, Dublin today Thursday at 2pm.
Mr O’Doherty’s new exhibition – “Language and Space” will be officially opened at the museum this afternoon.
