Suspicious device found in Athlone

Gardai in Athlone have this evening sealed off an area amid reports of a suspicious package underneath a parked car.

The area affected is reported to be between O’Brien’s Off-Licence and Supermacs in Irishtown/Golden Island area.

The Army Bomb Disposal team have travelled to the town.

A spokesperson for the Garda Press Office has confirmed that officers were alerted to a suspicious device in the Irishtown area this evening and the EOD team had been requested to attend.

A local apartment complex, adjacent to the car park where the car is located has also been evacuated.
