Man arrested in murder investigation

A 33 year old man has been arrested this evening (Wednesday) in relation to a murder earlier today in Sligo.

The man is currently being questioned at Sligo Garda Station under the provisions of section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 as amended.

The man is understood to be from North Roscommon and is known to Gardai.

His name has not been released and no further information on his identity is being made public at present.

The woman who was murdered has been named as 24 year old Natalie McGuinness from Easkey.

Earlier today at approx 10.30am Gardai were called to a house on the Mail Coach Road in the town.

Upon arrival they encountered a man carrying a knife.

Members of the Garda Regional Support Unit were summoned and they subsequently tazered the man.

The man and the woman, who was in her 20’s and in the house at the time, were brought to Sligo Regional Hospital, where the woman was pronounced dead.

The scene has been preserved and State Pathologist Marie Cassidy is expected to conduct a post-mortem examination later this evening.
