World Athletics title win for Boyle native John

Strandhill resident John McDermott, who is originally from Abbeytown in Boyle, won gold at the World Masters Athletics Championships in Finland on Tuesday.

John was participating in the Men’s Over 75 300 meters hurdles and won in a time of 55 seconds.

John is no stranger to the medal podium, having won gold in the Men’s 400m at the World Masters Championships in Poland in 2019 as well as having “a couple of silvers and bronzes” according to himself.

John’s friends and family in Boyle, Sligo and elsewhere will be keeping an eye on Sunday’s Men’s Over-75 4 × 400 meters relay when the spritely athlete participates along with his three other Irish team mates.

John’s brother Liam, along with his wife Alice, live in the family home in Abbeytown.
