Anti Dog Fouling initiative launched in Boyle

Boyle Tidy Towns & Waterways Ireland join Roscommon County Council in their Anti Dog Fouling initiative.

We’d like to reduce the dog waste contaminating our streets by encouraging walkers to pick up after their dog.

Bag it! Bin it! Bring it Home!

Plan your dog walking route. Carry your own poo bags or collect a Mitt Mutt bag from the dispensers at The Pleasure Grounds, Meadowvale Green, Plunkett Avenue, Boyle Abbey and soon to be at Boyle Harbour Marina canal walk.

On your return route, use the general waste bins in Boyle to dispose of the used bag. Waste bins are located at:-

King House bus stop
Bank of Ireland
Abbey College
Plunkett Avenue
Cnoc An Ráille/Station Road
Abbeytown Bridge
Abbeytown Road near St Joseph’s Resource Centre
Main St, beside Greenrock
Pleasure Grounds(2)
The Crescent(6)
Elphin Street

We have started using chalk spray to highlight dog mess left on our streets. The chalk spray is temporary and is to encourage owners not to leave it. It does look strange? But it seems it has improved the problem in other towns. We will also be stencilling the footpaths with anti dog fouling symbols.

Dog poo presents a significant public health risk, acting more as a biohazard than a natural fertilizer. One gram of dog waste can contain 23 million fecal bacteria, including organisms that cause infections, such as E. coli, Salmonella, Giardia, Hookworms and Toxocara roundworms which can be transmitted to humans. They can persist in the soil for years. When it rains, the waste washes into storm drains, contaminating water sources. Depending on weather conditions, dog feces can take up to 12 months to fully decompose, during which time it continues to pose an infection risk.
