An Post statement in relation to Boyle Post Office
There has been speculation in recent weeks as to the future location of Post Office services in Boyle. Viewers may recall back in September 2024 we contacted An Post when the Post Office building on Shop Street was put up for sale and we were informed at the time that “The Boyle premises at Shop Street will be offered for sale but with the post office remaining in place. As you will be aware the post office building is a large premises with the post office occupying just one part of the total property. Boyle is one of 14 such locations all over the country where the premises is being offered for sale with the post office itself remaining ‘in situ’.
Fast forward to October 2025 and we received a reply from the company to our most recent enquiry stating: “An Post are looking for a contractor to provide and run a post office in Boyle. We have received a number of applications and are processing those currently. Potential contractors must come forward with their own proposals on premises etc. The statement we provided to Boyletoday.com in September 2024 was an accurate reflection of the situation at the time. An Post was disposing of the building and the post office was remaining in situ”.
Another novel idea from Boyle Family Resource Centre
In a time when some families are finding it hard to make ends meet, the good folk at Boyle Family Resource have come up with a novel idea – ‘Halloween Costume Swap’. You can drop off your unwanted costume in the Centre from now until Monday 20th October. Come back again from Tuesday 21st or Friday 24th October between 2:00pm – 4:30pm to pick out a new costumes for this year’s spooky celebrations! According to Boyle FRC “It’s a fun, eco-friendly way to share the Halloween spirit while making sure every child can enjoy the magic of dressing up. Bring your old costumes, swap for something new, and let’s make this Halloween spooktacular for everyone”.
Living in the safest county in Ireland
Just like the availability of free parking, having Boyle located in ‘Ireland’s Safest County’ should be yet another marketing tool to get people to visit and live in our town. The recent title bestowed on Roscommon was provided in a study by Long and Co and is a news item that gained national publicity earlier in the week. (But the downside could come if Garda management were o see this as an opportunity to not increase Garda numbers in our county and reduce services even further!)
But in general, we have so much going for us here in Boyle that we should capatalise on this new found fame for our county. And to benefit, we do need more houses or apartments for the people who want to make Boyle their home. With only 3 residential properties currently advertised on daft.ie for sale in Boyle town, and not one advertised to rent, we are most certainly in a housing crisis here in Boyle. It’s great getting new titles like Ireland’s safest county but if we do not have the housing stock here for people to move into, then getting a kudos like this is a waste of time.
Brontie.ie comes to Boyle
Bank Holiday Monday the 27th of October and Brontie.ie will launch at King House Tea Rooms in Boyle between10am to 2pm. Brontie.ie is a new online cafe gifting platform allowing users to gift cafe items such as a coffee and a cake to a loved one. Founded in Kildare by Kevin Honer, it is now expanding to Boyle. According to Kevin: “The idea came while I was living in South Korea, where people often gifted coffees and cakes to friends with just a click. It felt so much more personal than a voucher or sending money. Brontie brings that experience to Ireland — thoughtful little gestures that brighten someone’s day and support local cafés”. Advice to motorists as deer rutting season takes place
Motorists around the general Lough Key area and along sections of the N4 are being advised to drive with caution as the deer ‘rutting’ season is in full swing. The rutting season occurs between October and December every year when male deer compete against each other to gain a female’s attention. At this time of year, deer collisions peak as many of the animals cross roads seeking new territories. The highest risk of collision is between sunset and midnight and the hours shortly before and after sunrise. Deer signs are in place at locations along the N4 and side roads where the animals are known to be active and are likely to cross. There are also large concentrations of deer on the Curlieu Mountain, The Plains and in the Corrigeenroe and Knockvicar areas where motorists are advised to drive with caution.
John McDermott – an inspiration for all
The most popular posts this week on our Facebook page were of 81 year old John McDermott who is originally from Abbeytown, and who has excelled at the European Masters Athletic Championships in Madeira. One photograph we published, courtesy of Sligo Athletic Club, showed the inspirational John in action in the Decathlon and you could be forgiven for thinking it was a 30 year old you were looking at! Apart from his gold medal, John was also named the ‘European Best Male Sprint Master Athlete 2024’ in the Over 80 category while in Madeira. In another Boyle link to the Championship, the team manager for the Irish Team at the Championships was Sean McDermott whose family are from Knockarush and who still have a house there.

And finally….!
A man wakes up one morning in Alaska to find a bear on his roof.
So he looks in the yellow pages and sure enough, there’s an advert for “Bear Removers.”
He calls the number, and the bear remover says he’ll be over in 30 minutes.
The bear remover arrives, and gets out of his van. He’s got a ladder, a baseball bat, a shotgun and a mean old pit bull.
“What are you going to do,” the homeowner asks?
“I’m going to put this ladder up against the roof, then I’m going to go up there and knock the bear off the roof with this baseball bat. When the bear falls off, the pit bull is trained to grab his testicles and not let go.
The bear will then be subdued enough for me to put him in the cage in the back of the van.”
He hands the shotgun to the homeowner.
“What’s the shotgun for?” asks the homeowner.
“If the bear knocks me off the roof, make sure to shoot the dog as quick as you can.”
