Applications now open for ‘Cathaoirleach’s Awards’

As part of the Creative Ireland Programme 2021, Roscommon County Council is inviting schools and students at all levels of primary and post-primary schools across the county to enter the Cathaoirleach’s Awards Competition.

The Cathaoirleach’s Creative Citizenship Award aims to highlight the diversity of arts, culture and heritage in County Roscommon.

This year’s competition responds to the visual arts curriculum in the form of a

Local Heroes Rock Art Project

Under four Categories:

  • Most Creative Rock Art Trail – Secondary School Level
  • Most Creative Rock Art Trail – Primary School Level
  • Most Environmentally Friendly Rock Art Trail – Secondary School Level
  • Most Environmentally Friendly Rock Art Trail – Primary School Level

Students are invited to create art pieces responding to the theme ‘Local Heroes’ using small rocks or stones to be part of their School’s Rock Art Trail.

Local heroes can be historical or present day, from any walk of life. For example, a local sports hero, someone from the arts, front line workers, local volunteers, teachers or family members that they feel have earned hero status in their eyes.

Collectively the students’ work will come together to form the School’s Rock Art Trail – a formation of the rocks that we be encourage you to place in your community – on the routes used by people locally for their 5k walks, on walking trails, or out in the open for as many people to enjoy as possible. Brighten up your local spot!

The Local Heroes Rock Art Trails will be created in time for Cruinniú na nÓg, Ireland’s national day of creative activity for children and young people – and entire families, which will take place on Saturday 12th June. The Awards will be announced/presented by Cathaoirleach Cllr. Laurence Fallon on Friday 11th June. Listings of all of the Rock Art Trails will feature in Roscommon County Council’s Cruinniú na nÓg programme so that they can be enjoyed by all (adhering to Covid restrictions).

All prize money will be paid directly to the winning schools. The prize is €250 for each category.

Artist Sarah Lundy has created a video with ideas for materials to use and methods to paint/draw on the rocks including the use of recycled/environmentally friendly materials and responding to the theme Local Heroes
