Fear Sligo A&E could be downgraded

Concerns have been raised that Sligo University Hospital’s A&E could be downgraded to a 12 hour facility.

Many from Boyle use Sligo A&E for emergency treatment.

The hospital is part of the Saolta group.

According to Sligo based Senator Marc McSharry, a review of Emergency Departments is currently underway by the group which could see some A&E’s reduced to a 12 hour service.

Senator McSharry said “I understand that one of the options being considered is the possibility of reducing ED services to a 12 hour period.  This would be disastrous for Sligo and put an even bigger strain on the other hospitals in the region which would have to shore up capacity.  The Emergency Department at Sligo University Hospital is an integral part of service provision in this region and any move to cut resources must be avoided at all costs.

The Saolta group manages seven hospitals in the West and North West including Letterkenny University Hospital, Sligo University Hospital, Mayo University Hospital, Roscommon University Hospital, Merlin Park, Portiuncla Hospital and University Hospital Galway.
