Gardai seek information following death of Roscommon man

The man who died following a fatal incident on Robinhood Road, Clondalkin, Dublin 22 on Sunday evening 23rd January, 2022 has been named as Ian McDonnell late of Lucan and Galway Road, Roscommon and Elphin.

At approximately 6.15pm 50 year old Ian McDonnell, was found lying on the roadway with serious life threatening injuries. Investigations have established that Mr McDonnell had attended his business premises, locally, a short time earlier. While present he intervened to prevent the theft of his car, a grey coloured Volkswagen Passat, registration number 161 OY 1861. In doing so he was carried on the bonnet of his vehicle, a distance, to where he was discovered.

Ian McDonnell was removed from the scene by ambulance to Tallaght University Hospital in a serious condition. Ian McDonnell has passed away yesterday evening, 28th January, 2022.

An Garda Síochána at Ballyfermot investigating this incident established an investigation team under a Senior Investigating Officer on the 23rd January, 2022. Significant progress has been made to date in the investigation including interviewing of witnesses, door-to-door enquiries and harvesting of CCTV images.

The grey coloured Volkswagen Passat, registration number 161 OY 1861, which left the scene and was located on Limekiln Green, Greenhills, Dublin 12, on Friday 28th January, 2022. This vehicle has been recovered to be forensically examined.

A second vehicle involved in the incident, a silver coloured Toyota Aqua, registration number 152 D 32687, which was stolen in Crumlin on the afternoon of Sunday 23rd January, 2022 and was located burnt out in Ballinascorney, Tallaght on Tuesday 25th January, 2022. This vehicle has been recovered to be forensically examined.

Gardaí in Clondalkin are seeking the public’s assistance for the following information:

Gardaí are anxious to hear from anyone who may have been in the Robinhood Road area of Clondalkin on the evening of Sunday 23rd January between 5.30pm and 7pm and who may have witnessed any activity which drew their attention or who may have any video dash cam footage.

The grey coloured Volkswagen Passat 161 OY 1861 stolen at the incident on the 23rd January 2022 has been recovered on Limekiln Green, Greenhills, Dublin 12, on Friday 28th January. Where was that vehicle between Sunday 23rd January and Friday 28th January, 2022?

The silver coloured Toyota Aqua was stolen in Crumlin on the afternoon of Sunday 23rd January, 2022 and was located burnt out in Ballinascorney, Tallaght on Tuesday 25th January, 2022. Where was that vehicle between Sunday 23rd January and Tuesday 25th January, 2022?

Investigating Gardaí are looking for any information on where either car was parked up at any location, or was either vehicle seen in any petrol station or at any other location over those days?

Investigating Gardaí are also seeking assistance from anyone who may have seen either of the cars in the vicinity of Ballymount, Walkinstown, Tallaght, Kylemore Road, or Ballyfermot between 6.30pm and 9pm on Sunday night 23rd January, 2022.

Mr McDonnell was predeceased by his parents John and Marie and is survived by his heartbroken wife Monica (nee Beirne) and children Clodagh, Gareth and Aoife. Ian will be fondly remembered and sadly missed by his wife and children, sister Sandra McFadden (husband Keith), sisters-in-law Irene and her husband Andrew, Olga and her partner Richard, brother-in-law Adrian and his wife Tracy, aunts Breda, Monica and Laura, nieces and nephews, Joseph, Ciara, Colm, Rachel, Karen, Sara and Vanessa. He is also fondly remembered by his many close friends.
