Local roads described as “treacherous”

Roads across the region are being described as “treacherous” on Monday morning following overnight freezing temperatures.

Black ice is reported on many roads with the Boyle to Frenchpark road, the old Frenchpark to Ballaghaderreen and the Ballinameent to Frenchpark roads being particularly dangerous.

Gardai are asking morotists to slow down and drive with care as many secondary roads have not been gritted.

Met Eireann say early frost and ice clearing gradually to give a cold day with sunny spells and scattered showers. Some of the showers wintry on high ground in the west and north. Highest temperatures of just 3 to 7 degrees. Becoming windy too, with strong and gusty northwesterly winds on Atlantic coasts extending to all areas later in the day.
