Roscommon County Council has signalled their intention to carry out major safety works at the Tawnytaskin junction on the N61/N4 outside Boyle.
According to the local authority, the works are being carried out in the interest of the safety and convenience of road users and to provide such traffic calming measures as it considers desirable in respect of a public road in its charge. Works proposals under Section 38 may be carried out by a Roads Authority with the approval of the Chief Executive.
The aim of this scheme is to address the current safety concerns in this location, and to narrow the exit lane on the N61. This will be achieved by the installation of a channelizing island on the N61 in accordance with DN-GEO-03060, in addition to this new signage and road markings will be installed to raise awareness of junction. Roscommon County Council also propose to close the left turning lane on the N4 westbound at this junction; and
install a one-way cycle lane to allow cyclists merge from the N4 to the N61 and vice versa.
The project involves:
- Site clearance works
- Install channelising islands
- Provision of a one-way cycle track between the N61 & N4
- Ancillary works including the provision of traffic signs, road markings, kerbs, street lighting and high-friction surfacing.
An Appropriate Assessment screening report in respect of the development has been carried out and is available for inspection. The report concluded that the development does not need to proceed to Stage 2 Appropriate Assessment. In accordance with Article 120 (3), as amended by S.I. No. 296 of 2018, a person may, within four weeks beginning on the date of the publication of this notice apply to Coimisiún Pleanála for a screening determination as to whether the development would be likely to have significant effects on the environment. Plans and Particulars of the proposed development may be inspected or purchased (at a fee not exceeding the reasonable cost of making a copy) for a period of four weeks from 26 May 2026, during public opening hours at the offices of Roscommon County Council, Áras an Chontae, Roscommon Town F42 VR98. Plans and particulars may also be viewed online on the Roscommon County Council’s Public Consultation Portal at Home – Roscommon County Council.
