N4 Active Travel public consultation has commenced

The N4 Active Travel Collooney to Castlebaldwin Scheme is currently in the early stages of planning with online public consultation currently taking place.

The objective of this project, which is funded by Transport Infrastructure Ireland, is to provide continuous Active Travel facilities from Collooney to Castlebaldwin utilising an existing Active Travel facility from Toberbride Business Park to Doorly Td. (Constructed as part of the N4 Collooney to Castlebaldwin Road Project).

This scheme has the potential to link with the proposed Sligo, Leitrim and Northern Counties Railway (SLNCR) Greenway, and the proposed Sligo Greenway – Collooney to Bellaghy, as well as the ongoing Active Travel interventions in Collooney Village.

DBFL Consulting Engineers has been appointed by Sligo County Council to provide multi-disciplinary engineering and other specialist consultancy services to progress the project through Phases 2 to 4 of the Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) Project Management Guidelines. This project is currently at Phase 2 entitled Options Selection.

The purpose of Phase 2 is to examine route options to determine a Preferred route corridor. During Phase 2 all reasonable / feasible options are examined and their costs, benefits and effects on the environment are assessed to identify a preferred route corridor that will progress to Phase 3 Design and Environmental Evaluation.

It should be noted that the project Study Area presented as part of Public Consultation No. 1 has been updated slightly to include a buffer from the proposed route corridor centrelines. This has been included to accommodate the environmental appraisal of the proposed route corridors. This has resulted in the project Study Area increasing. The changes will be presented as part of Public Consultation No.2 and will be available to view on the public consultation portal.

Public consultation forms an important part of advancing the Options Selection process and allows public involvement in identifying key constraints and opportunities.

Public Consultation No. 2 for the proposed project commenced on Monday, 26th February 2024 and will run until Friday, 22nd March 2024. This consultation is being held online through a public consultation portal which will be accessible at the following website https://consult.sligococo.ie/browse. It will contain all the information that will be displayed at the in-person public consultation event. Submission of comments or queries can be made via the public consultation portal.
