Frustration all around at delay on Aldi decision
If the delay in granting or refusing planning for the Aldi development in Boyle is frustrating for the public, can you just imagine what it must be like for the company behind the project? A decision from An Coimisiun Pleanala was expected on August 18th but that has been extended and every day we wait for news on the appeal, which the vast majority of people in Boyle hope will be positive.
At this stage, there is absolutely nothing anyone can do either to support or alter the decision – which is most likely already made and just needs to be conveyed to the promoters. It is understood Aldi, who have invested a considerable amount of money to date in the project, are fully committed and if planning is granted they will move quickly to commence work on what will be a the largest infrastructural project in the history of the town centre. Through the various submissions that were made to An Coimisiun Pleanala a few months ago during the designated timeframe by a number of individuals and groups like the Town Team, the company are fully aware of the support from the people of Boyle for the project, for which it is understood they are most grateful.
So for now, there is nothing anyone can do only wait for news to be conveyed to Aldi and hope that it will be to grant permission for what will be a welcomed transformational development for our town.

The forgotten man of Boyle history
Next Wednesday September 16th sees the 88th anniversary of the death of an infamous son of Boyle – Jasper Tully. Jasper was born in 1858. His father George founded the Roscommon Herald newspaper a year later in 1859 and his grandfather Charles had founded the Roscommon Journal in 1828. Japer also purchased what was then an old closed down building that previously housed a Spool Factory on St. Patrick Street back in the late 1800’s to be the new base for his newspaper. This building is now home to the modern day Spool Factory Co Working Hub and Office Suites.
On the death of his father, and subsequently his mother, Jasper took over the running of the newspaper and his strong nationalist views were to see him imprisoned with Parnell in Kilmainham Gaol – the first of many occasions he was incarcerated. Those who remember Jasper recalled that “The Chief” as he was known, was a difficult yet highly influential man. He was elected an MP for Leitrim South in 1892 and became a Whip in the Irish Parliamentary Party. He stood for Roscommon North in 1917 but was not elected.
He was married to a Mary E. Monson who owned the Royal Hotel. Their marriage was neither peaceful or happy and they realistically lived separate lives. One of the many stories that was told of Jasper related to a letter, addressed to Mrs Tully, arriving to the hotel some time after his wife’s death. Jasper, it was said, crossed out the address and reposted it with the wording “Not known at this address – try hell”!
Jasper, the forgotten man of Boyle history and one of the most powerful people locally of his time, died aged 88 on September 16th 1938 and is buried with his family in Assylinn Graveyard, halfway up the hill on the left hand side.

And finally……….!
A woman was taking a pleasant stroll through a quiet neighborhood when she spotted a wrinkled, weathered little man rocking contentedly in a chair on his front porch.
Enchanted by his serene expression, she walked up the garden path, leaned over the railing, and said, “Excuse me, sir, but I couldn’t help noticing just how peaceful and genuinely happy you look.
Tell me, what’s your secret to living such a long, joyful life?”
The man smiled thinly through yellowed teeth and replied, “Well, ma’am, I smoke three packs of unfiltered cigarettes every single day.”
“Really?” she asked, surprised.
“Oh, absolutely. I also polish off a full case of whiskey every week, eat greasy, fatty foods for every meal, and I have never exercised a single day in my life.”
The woman gasped in astonishment. “That is downright miraculous! If you don’t mind me asking, just how old are you?”
He paused his rocking, looked her dead in the eye, and said:
“Twenty-six.”
