Talk on Boyle Suffragette Thursday
Marie Egan Paul from Boyle will give a talk on Thursday 24th in King House at 3pm on Margaret Gillespie Cousins.
Ms Gillespie Cousins was Roscommon’s very own suffragette.
Suffragettes were members of women’s organisations in the late-19th and early-20th centuries which advocated the extension of the “franchise”, or the right to vote in public elections, to women.
Born on the Crescent in Boyle in 1878, she died in Adyar, India 1952.
She was the first woman magistrate in India and in 1925 and formed the All-India Women’s conference and later the All-Asian Women’s conference in 1931.
