Three weeks until Darkness into Light
Preparations continue for this year’s Darkness into Light walk which will take place in Boyle at 4.15am on the morning of Saturday May 9th. According to the organisers: “This walk has always been about more than just the distance: it’s about coming together as a community, remembering those we’ve lost, and standing in support of those who may be struggling. From darkness into light, we walk side by side to show that no one has to face their darkest moments alone. This year feels especially meaningful. After time apart, we return stronger, united and more determined than ever to raise awareness and hope. Whether you’ve walked with us before or are joining for the first time, your presence matters. Every step is a symbol of solidarity, compassion, and the belief that brighter days are ahead. Join us in Boyle as we walk together: for hope, for support, and for each other”.
Anti Social behaviour raised at LCSP consultation in Boyle
Last Thursday a public consultation with Roscommon Local Community Safety Partnership took place in King House. Members of the public in Boyle were requested to attend as it was stated: “Your views are important in helping shape Roscommon’s new Community Safety Plan — a plan focused on ensuring people feel safe and supported in their local communities”. A number of those in attendance were there out of frustration at the increase in anti social behaviour is certain areas of Boyle and they perhaps assumed that there would be Gardai present on the night so they could vent their anger publicly at the situation. But the event was not like those of the Joint Policing Committee (a body that the Safety Partnership has replaced), so the attendees did not get to tell the Gardai of their frustration and annoyance as it was a consultation event and not a public meeting. Hopefully the members of the Partnership and officials from Roscommon Co Co who were in attendance on the night, will convey the anger of those present to An Garda Siochana.
If you could not attend the event you can still complete the safety survey here.
Great effort being made locally to highlight dangers of Dog Poo
In recent weeks you may have noticed yellow circles on the footpaths around town. And if you did – they have served their purpose, as they are being placed to highlight dog poo – a problem that is affecting Boyle and indeed every town in Ireland. Under the Litter Pollution Act 1997 (as amended), dog owners in Ireland must immediately remove dog feces in public places, including footpaths, parks, and beaches. Failure to “scoop the poop” can result in a €150 on-the-spot fine, with maximum fines up to €4,000 upon conviction. Proper disposal in a sanitary manner (litter bin) is mandatory. But we have so many dogs roaming off lead in Boyle, that chances are they are the main culprits. Did you know that dog poo is an environmental pollutant, since it contains upwards of 23 million microorganisms of bacteria (twice as much as human poo!). The harmful diseases and viruses contained in dog poo, including E.coli, can be passed onto humans if the mess isn’t properly cleaned up.
Dog poo can contain the Toxocara worm, which is known to cause toxocarisis – leading to dizziness, seizures, asthma, blindness, and breathing difficulties; which makes it especially dangerous to children.

We are blessed to have such a great group of men and women who come out every Wednesday morning to do an hour or so clean up around the town. And finally….!
One day Paddy, who had been stranded on a deserted island for over 10 years, saw a speck on the horizon.
He thought to himself, “It’s certainly not a ship”
As the speck got closer and closer, he began to rule out even the possibilities of a small boat or a raft.
Suddenly from the surf strode a figure clad in a black wet suit. Putting aside the scuba tanks and mask stood a drop-dead gorgeous woman! She walked up to the stunned man and said to him, “Tell me, how long has it been since you’ve had a good cigar?
“Ten years,” replied the amazed Paddy.
With that, she reached over and unzipped a waterproof pocket on the left sleeve of her wet suit and pulled out a fresh pack of cigars and a lighter.
He took a cigar, slowly lit it, and took a long drag.
Ahh “that is so good! I’d almost forgotten how great a smoke can be!”
“And how long has it been since you’ve had a drop of Jameson Whiskey?” asked the lady
Trembling, the castaway replied, “Ten years.”
Hearing that, she reached over to her right sleeve, unzipped a pocket there and removed a flask and handed it to him.
He opened the flask and took a long drink. “Nectar of the gods!” shouted Paddy”
At this point the gorgeous lady started to slowly unzip the long front of her wet suit, right down the middle. She looked at the trembling man and asked, “And how long has it been since you played around?”
With tears in his eyes, the Paddy fell to his knees and sobbed, “Ah for god sake! Don’t tell me that you’ve got golf clubs in there too!”
