Roscommon Play Day in Boyle deemed a great success

Roscommon’s Play Day 2025 took place recently in Lough Key Forest Park in Boyle. The theme of this year’s event was ‘The Power of Play’ theme was incorporated throughout the day’s celebrations. There was a huge crowd, with over one thousand and children attending on the day.

The event was officially launched by recently elected Cathaoirleach of Boyle Municipal District, Cllr. Sean Moylan who reminded everyone present of taking time out to play.

Children of different age groups, abilities, nationalities and cultures were afforded the opportunity to play together through a range of indoor and outdoor activities that were organised, for example FAI shots at goal, GAA games, Connacht Rugby, Lego and Hula Hoop games.

The circus performers such as the Science Stilt-Walker and the Flea Circus enthralled all the children. Roscommon Childcare Committee had a wonderful range of games available for all ages and abilities which were in keeping with the ‘Power of Play’ theme.

A trio of face painters were in high demand and were one of the most sought after activities on the day! Many Ukrainian and newly arrived families to the county availed of free transport that was organised for them. This was a joint initiative between Roscommon County Council and Roscommon Leader Partnership. Three buses were utilized to transport people to the event and each operated to full capacity.

The entire day represented the wonder and discovery that unfolds when children play outside. Access to outdoor play means children have many opportunities for developing their imagination and physical abilities. Playing in nature also presents opportunities for exploration and adventure.

National Play Day is more than just a day of fun, it is a celebration of the fundamental role that play has in all of our lives. Play is essential for children’s physical, emotional and cognitive growth. The Community Section in Roscommon County Council co-ordinated and organised the event with support from Roscommon County Childcare Committee and Roscommon Sports Partnership.

Once again this year, the Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth funded the Play Day. Their mission is to enhance the lives of children, young people, adults, families and communities, recognising diversity and promoting equality of opportunity.
