Diarmuid Sutton shines in Galway

Boyle swimmer Diarmuid Sutton was on top form in Galway this past weekend representing Trident Swim Club along with club team-mates Wiktoria Weinert and Eoin Guckian at the A Grade Gala at Leisureland in Salthill. Members of Trident’s top squad, the swimmers all put in some impressive swims, with a 100% PB record, not to mention a handful of Irish Division times and a couple of Connacht Squad times into the bargain.

Sutton’s first event was the 200M Individual Medley where he put in an impressive PB of 14 seconds, with his winning time of 2:26.74, down from 2:40.80, bagging himself not only his first gold medal of the day, but also his first Connacht Squad time and an Irish Division 1 qualifying time.

Up again shortly afterwards, this time swimming in the 200M breaststroke, Sutton once more smashed his PB, knocking 9 seconds off his seed time of 2:51.61 to take another gold medal in a time of 2:45.60 and not only another Division 1 qualifying time but also his first Open qualifying time.

In his final event of the day, Sutton, grabbed his second Connacht Squad time, yet another Division 1 time, and a bronze medal to end the weekend in style.

14 year old Sutton who attends Abbey Community College has now earned his stripes for the prestigious Connacht Squad where he will take up his place after Christmas. He has also achieved his first open qualifying time, which is a sign of great things to come from the youngster and we can expect to hear much more from him in the coming months.

Swimmers from Trident are going from strength to strength and now have three members qualified to take part in the International Dave McCullagh Memorial Meet at Bangor in February, a massive achievement for both the swimmers and the club.
