Motorists advised of dangerous driving conditions

Motorists are advised of dangerous driving conditions this morning Monday January 5th following another night of freezing conditions when temperatures in the Boyle area dropped to -6 degrees.
While main roads were gritted overnight, secondary and back roads are reported to be in a treacherous condition with the Corrigeenroe to Boyle, Frenchpark and Gurteen roads all being reported as ‘lethal’.
The N5 between Frenchpark and Ballaghaderreen is also reported as treacherous with black ice and reports of a HGV having gone off the road.
Motorists are being advised to travel only if essential on these and other untreated roads.
Abbey Community College will remain open today as planned.
Local Link Route 571 – Arigna via Drumshanbo to Boyle is not operating the first service this morning, recommencing around noon, while Route 570 Boyle to Roscommon will not serve Croghan or Elphin on the first service this morning.

Today
Very cold to begin today, with frost and icy stretches on untreated surfaces slow to clear. Patches of freezing fog and some lying snow in places too. Dry and sunny for most, with wintry showers becoming more isolated. Highest temperatures of only 1 to 6 degrees in light to moderate northwest to west winds.
Tonight
Cold, dry and clear for most at first tonight. Widespread frost and icy stretches will form early on along with patches of mist and fog. Cloud will build from the west overnight, raising temperatures slightly, and outbreaks of rain or sleet will reach Atlantic coastal areas by morning. Lowest temperatures of -2 to +3 degrees, coldest early on, with light to moderate westerly winds backing southwesterly by morning.
Tomorrow
Cloudy with outbreaks of rain and drizzle moving eastwards through the morning and early afternoon, followed by sunny spells and scattered showers. Highest temperatures of 5 to 8 degrees with mostly moderate southwesterly winds veering northwesterly in the evening.
A new low temperature/ice warning was issued at 8.56am Monday for Roscommon and is in place from 11am Monday to 9am Tuesday. Temperatures falling to between -1 and -3 degrees generally. Sharp frost and icy stretches. Black ice with treacherous travel conditions.
