Remembering Johnny Greenan:

Boyle Celtic F.C. extends its deepest condolences to Betty, Shane, Darragh, Niall, the wider Greenan family and all of you who knew Johnny as a friend. Known as Johnny to so many, he was a true gentleman and a cherished member of the community. Johnny played a massive role in Boyle, not just in soccer but indeed in the town in general. A former player, coach and administrator, Johnny gave decades of volunteerism to Boyle Celtic. Many players passed through John’s hands and graduated to first team level where his belief of hard work and honesty of effort were instilled in each and every player. It was also Johnny who pioneered the summer soccer camps via the FAI, and brought football and a lot of fun, to 1000s of kids down the years. It wasn’t just Boyle Celtic, however. Both Sligo Rovers and the Republic of Ireland national team received unwavering support. It was the stories of trips to major tournaments following The Boys in Green with Johnny not afraid to reminiscence about “the good ol’ days.” Time would simply fly by when discussing the latest goings on on the pitch with Johnny. May his gentle soul rest in peace.

Results:

Our Roberto’s/ GreenRock sponsored men’s reserves were in flying form as they defeated St. Cuan’s United by five goals to two on Sunday morning. Celtic took the lead on 16 minutes as Alfonso Barrios tucked away a penalty. St. Cuan’s equalised shortly after before Colm Morris restored the home side’s lead with a strike from distance. The half-time jaffa cakes worked a treat as Barrios finished off a brilliant team move shortly after the interval. Callum Andrews added his name to the scoresheet on 76 minutes while Colm Morris added his second and Celtic’s fifth of the contest with another impressive finish. The away side, to their credit never stopped trying and found a consolation near the end but it was Patrick Whitton’s side that emerged victorious. Team: S. Conlon, D. Hughes, L. Casey, S. O’Loughlin, K. Byrne; S. Duarte, C. Morris, D. Hensey; I. Said, C. Andrews, A. Barrios. Sub: J. Burke Tighe for Said (80 mins).

Our under 17 boys qualified for the cup final with a 2-1 semi-final triumph over Arrow Harps in Riverstown. The final takes place on the week commencing the 27th of April.

Our under 12 boys defeated St. John’s 4-1.

Our under 14 boys defeated Yeats United 6-2.

Our under 13 girls drew 2-all with Real Tubber.
